But of course, everyone was either in the stadium or watching it on TV so the traffic was light. I ate breakfast while sunning myself on the veranda, still watching the show, and set off for Wembley around 11am, giving myself plenty of time, assuming I’d be stuck in endless traffic heading to Wembley. I switched on the TV and watched the start, knowing I’d be on that stage 5 or so hours later, which was weird because I was still in bed.

I’m often asked which gig is the most memorable I’ve played. One of the tracks from my Backstory album, Big River, is featured on a nice documentary film that celebrates 40 years of the Great North Run: Great North: A Run, A River, A Region. His daughter Martha, has put the record together using tracks Gerry was working on and some that didn’t make previous albums. After that, I worked on various recording projects both at home and in London studios, which included recording tracks for Rod Stewart, others for producer Trevor Horn, and some for Gerry Rafferty’s new album, the latter being my first posthumous record (Gerry died 10 years ago). We were then supposed to do a rock cruise and go to Brazil and Russia but you know the rest… I ended up spending a week sunbathing on a beach in Miami and arrived home home in time to hear Boris declaring a lockdown. In February, I spent a week working on the Newcastle based charity show, Sunday for Sammy, then went directly into a brief DSLDire StraitsLegacy rehearsal in London followed by a gig in Rome and 4 in Florida. Peter very kindly loaned me his Bosendorfer, which meant I had a choice of Bosendorfers, a rare luxury and a first for me. In January, I was at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studios in Wiltshire, making my Backstory record. Given the situation, 2020 turned out to be quite a busy year.
